What are structured products?
Structured products are pre-packaged investments, usually issued as market-linked debentures or notes, that combine a fixed-income component with exposure to an underlying asset such as the Nifty 50. Their payout depends on how that underlying asset performs over a fixed tenure.
Key features
- Market-linked returns: the payout is tied to an index or other reference asset, based on a formula set at the start.
- Defined outcomes: the possible returns in different market scenarios are known upfront.
- Principal-protected and non-protected variants: some structures aim to return the principal at maturity, others take more risk for higher potential returns.
- Fixed tenure: typically held until maturity, with limited liquidity before that.
Who is it for?
Structured products suit high-net-worth investors who want a customised risk-return trade-off and can stay invested for the full tenure. They carry issuer credit risk as well as market risk.
