What is a SIF?
A Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) is a new investment category introduced by SEBI. It sits between mutual funds and Portfolio Management Services (PMS): it is run by a SEBI-registered mutual fund house, but its fund managers get more freedom to use advanced strategies than a regular mutual fund allows.
For investors who have outgrown regular mutual funds but find PMS or AIFs too expensive or complex, a SIF offers a regulated middle path.
Key features
- Minimum investment of ₹10 lakh per investor (PAN), across all SIF strategies of a fund house. Accredited investors are exempt.
- Long-short strategies: funds can take limited short positions through derivatives, aiming to manage risk in falling markets.
- Regulated like mutual funds: offered only by eligible SEBI-registered AMCs, with the same disclosure and transparency standards.
- Flexible structures: strategies can be open-ended, close-ended or interval, depending on the fund.
Types of SIF strategies
- Equity: equity long-short, equity ex-top 100 long-short, and sector rotation long-short.
- Debt: debt long-short and sectoral debt long-short.
- Hybrid: active asset allocator long-short and hybrid long-short.
Who is it for?
SIFs suit investors with a larger surplus (₹10 lakh or more) who understand market risk and want access to strategies beyond regular mutual funds, with lower entry points than PMS (₹50 lakh) or AIFs (₹1 crore).
